The Schedule & Venues

Sunday 8th August — Formby Ladies Golf Club

Historical Significance

Founded in 1896, Formby Ladies is the only truly independent ladies’ golf club in Great Britain. Set among a spectacular landscape of coastal sand dunes and towering pine forests, the course features design refinements from legendary architect Harry Colt. It has hosted numerous national and international championships, and was highly praised by Open Champion Greg Norman, who remarked that it “clearly shows that courses do not have to be 7,000 yards plus to be formidable.”

Monday 9th August — Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club

Historical Significance

Affectionately known as “S&A,” this club was founded in 1906 and later refined by the legendary five-time Open Champion and course architect James Braid. S&A holds a prestigious place in golf history as the host of the Ryder Cup in both 1933 and 1937—the latter marking the first time the United States team won on British soil. The course remains a regular Final Qualifying venue for The Open.

Tuesday 10th August — Hesketh Golf Club

Historical Significance

Established in 1885, Hesketh is Southport’s oldest golf club and the birthplace of the English Golf Union. Originally laid out by George Lowe (who also designed the original courses at Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham), Hesketh offers a unique, testing combination of traditional links holes and scenic parkland, bordered by a renowned nature reserve.

Wednesday 11th August — West Lancashire Golf Club

Historical Significance

Founded in 1873, West Lancashire is one of the ten oldest golf clubs in England and the oldest in the county of Lancashire. Having celebrated its sesquicentennial, it stands as one of the most natural, demanding, and highly praised links courses in the British Isles. It has a long-standing history as a trusted Final Qualifying venue for The Open Championship.

Thursday 12th August (The Grand Final) — Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Reserved for the top 12 qualifying players (10 Net + 2 Gross) to contest the final round.

Historical Significance

Formed in 1889, Royal Birkdale is consistently ranked among the top courses in the world. It has hosted The Open Championship 11 times (most recently in July 2026), crowning iconic champions such as Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, and Jordan Spieth. Players will finish their round with the view of Birkdale’s striking white, ship-like Art Deco clubhouse, built in 1935.

Thursday 12th August — Hillside Golf Club

An 18-hole individual Stableford round for all players who do not qualify for the Grand Final.

Historical Significance

Founded in 1911, Hillside is widely regarded as one of the finest links courses in the UK . Extensively remodeled in the 1960s by Fred Hawtree, the course runs alongside the railway line before routing deep into dramatic, towering sand dunes. Greg Norman famously declared Hillside’s back nine to be “the best in Britain”.

Tournament Format

The event is contested as a 72-Hole Individual Stableford.

Every competitor is guaranteed play on all five days of the event, either contesting the Grand Final at Royal Birkdale or the individual Stableford round at Hillside on the final day.

Entry Requirements & Eligibility

Gender Restriction

This is a male-only competition.

Age & Club Affiliation

All competitors must be 18 years of age or older and must be active members of an affiliated golf club.

Handicap Requirements

Competitors must hold an active CONGU handicap (or equivalent). The maximum handicap index for the tournament is 18. Players with a higher handicap index are welcome to enter, but must play off a maximum limit of 18 during the championship.
